The dome
The hemispherical greenhouse near the entrance has become the Botanical Garden’s icon. It is a cold greenhouse with a winter temperature of 10 – 12°C and accommodates plants from regions with warm, dry summers and rainy winters. Visitors can enjoy not only the floral splendour of the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands (e.g. various species of viper’s bugloss) in spring, but also exotic plants from distant continents with their impressive leaf and fruit shapes all year round.
Virtual tour
The tour is the result of a project by students of Düsseldorf’s College for Higher Professional Training under Thomas Trzaska’s supervision (teamXmedia). The user can choose from two different versions of 17 different panoramic shots. One version requires Quicktime to view these shots (available for downloading from the Internet) and comes in a single file of about 3.5 MB in which all 17 shots are combined into a single sequence. You can change the viewing position by clicking on the map or by clicking within the film.
The second version is a little simpler and requires Java. The viewing position can be changed here by clicking on the map.

Aerial tour
A video has been taken of the exotic plants with the aid of an innovative airship, independently designed and realized by students from several universities in
North-Rhine/Westphalia. To this end, the airship equipped with cameras spent several hours in flight over the various areas of the dome and recorded video material.
Gliding smoothly and slowly, the seemingly weightless airship took shots from unusual positions. In the video, the viewer hovers in the tree-tops or looks down from
above onto the varied arrangements of plants from all over the world.
